Job Description:

SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Aquatic Center Manager, incumbent creates and maintains a safe public swimming and general pool environment. Provides instructions in aquatic programs, including learn to swim, to the community. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Guards pool an enforces the rules;
  • Answers the telephone;
  • Performs light cleaning of bathhouse and deck;
  • Administers first aid as needed;
  • Handles discipline as needed;
  • Teaches swim lessons;
  • Assists with daily reports as needed;
  • Vacuums pool.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other duties as assigned by Aquatic Center Manager.

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. If at any time the incumbent is unsure of their role or specific responsibilities, it is the incumbent’s responsibility to refer to their job description and ask for clarification from their supervisor. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two years of High School Education.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Must possess simple record keeping skills;
  • Ability to use pool vacuum and safety equipment, ;
  • Ability to perform moderately complex, relatively standardized tasks, processes or operations;
  • Ability to apply routine practices, rules, regulations procedures or techniques that are relevant to assigned tasks;

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using money, weights and measures, volume and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS – Required for Continued Employment

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License if a City vehicle is used;
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR by Jeff Ellis & Associations, Inc. .
  • Lifeguarding;
  • Water Safety Instructor Preferred.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
